The roots of my interests in migrants’ and laborers’ lives in South Africa and China could perhaps partly be traced to my family’s background and partly to my undergraduate studies at University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). I don’t know much about my grandparents on both sides of the family, but I do know that they were from the Chaoshan area in Guangdong Province, China before they settled in Vietnam at staggered times. Because of my grandparents’ origin, we are considered to be Chaozhou, Chiuchow, or Teochew people, depending on which dialect you speak.
